my good friend, c (we have been friends for 10 years!!) recently got married. and i was very happy to attend her gorgeous wedding lunch at cocotte.
located in little india, cocotte sits in this little indie hotel, wanderlust. the restaurant is beautiful and it has many decorations i want to steal ;p the folks at the restaurant were very nice – they made these gorgeous placards and centrepieces for the lunch.
two weeks before the lunch, we were asked to choose our appetizer, main and dessert – i went ahead with pear, bleu’d auvergne salad, boeuf bourguignon and strawberry and pistachio cream tart. of course, we all ended up eating everyone else’s plates.
first we were served some warm toasty mini baguette. they were yummy – slapped them with some cold butter, they were perfect. it just happened my friend w (who sat beside me) ordered soup of the day – cauliflower with truffle oil. the soup was rich and delicious, and seriously how can i say no to truffle oil. i personally do not like cauliflower but i will drink this soup anytime.
for my pear, bleu’d auvergne salad, it was another delicious dish. anything with blue cheese usually sits well with me and this was no exception. though i cannot taste much of the hazelnut dressing, i always love the peppery-ness in arugula.
however my favorite appetitzer of the day was the pissaladiere – nicoise style onion and anchovy tart – it was savory and sweet all at the same time. i really can eat this forever. the two tiny bites i stole from a and w were not enough.
next was our main. i was very particular excited about this one. i love boeuf bourguignon but i cant cook them at home (beef is not allowed in the ng household. papa ng and mdm tan are buddhists) and good version is hard to find. cocotte version was hearty and meaty. all of us were looking for bowls of rice to eat with this stew (we ended up soaking the bread in the sauce). as its a very rich dish, after awhile i got a bit sick of it and find it too salty. i think i really needed that bowl of rice.
i also got to try j’s pan seared chicken with pine nuts, mushroom and port cream. the chicken was cooked to perfection and that sauce was to die for. the next main i got to try was bbA’s pan seared sole. this was my least favorite of all mains. there was not much flavor and i think the fish was a tad overcooked.
at this point, j and i were surprised that we were quite full. the portion of the appetizer and main were huge. but we always have stomaches for dessert.
i got the strawberry and pistachio cream tart which was alright – didnt blow my mind and the almond tart shell was too sweet for my liking. i took a bite of j’s opera cake – the chocolate ganache was rich and it was not overly sweet. j and i forced a to share his basque cake with us (in the end, a couldnt stomach anymore dessert and we hijacked it). it was soooo gooood. the crust was crumbly and buttery, and the chocolate filling was rich and flavorful.
after all these sweets, coffee was much needed. we stayed on for awhile to chat with the lovely bride and took some pictures. it was a beautiful beautiful wedding. i am so so very happy for my dear dear friend.cocotte 2 upper dickson road (wanderlust hotel) +65 6298 1188 open mon – sat. lunch – 12pm-2pm, dinner – 630pm -1030om
