on our last night in bangkok, K and i decided to try one of de most talked about seafood places – somboon. K’s friend raved about de crabs, even de reception at our hotel said its a must try.
it was a 30 minutes ride from our hotel to de surawong outlet. once reached, there was no queue. however we were made to go to de 3rd level. fyi there were tables available on de ground and 2nd floor – i seriously dun understand why we have to go to de 3rd floor.
somboon is huge. for de surawong outlet, there are 4 levels. yet despite its size (in terms of de place and de number of outlets they have), they only accept cash (note: as this was de last day in bangkok, K and I spent most of our cash. ha. we were really on a tight budget).
despite de tight budget, we managed to order a fair bit of food.
first – de famous fried curry crab. personally this do nothing to me. i have no feelings toward this dish. its just a v eggy dish with spicy and tomato sauce. de crab is alright. to be honest, i rather eat de crabs in singapore.
we also ordered a claypot prawn with glass noodles. K likes this dish because of de heavy use of dark soya sauce. while for me, once again, no feelings toward this dish as moi no like dark soya sauce. i think it takes away de original flavor of de food.
de orh luak we ordered is so-so. i prefered de version from sornthong – de latter oyster is bigger, fresher and juicier. that being said – it was my favorite dish from somboon.
de last (forgotten) dish was grilled sotong. this was definitely way better than de ones from sornthong. but still its rubbery. forgettable.
in short, i will avoid somboon at all cost. de service is crap (they have gazillion staff hanging around; i am unsure of their existence) and de food is definitely OVER-RATED. K said that i am angsty about de meal. and yes i am. i guessed de warning sign would have been that its a chain restaurant. at de end of de day, i think i also like de seafood better in singapore and malaysia. perhaps its a matter of taste.ohhh i am so not putting somboon address and website here. google it if you really must try.
